Description

Explains absence - not a beast but looked like one; had nasty semi-cancerous growth on jaw which doctors excised six weeks ago; just out of hospital; not congenital but begotten years ago by stroke of golf ball causing plate of bone to grow outwards; was ripe and beginning to send shoots southwards into throat so time to do for him; made splendid recovery; still gulf of Mexico in jaw but doesn't show and can send successful Gulf Stream (of whisky and soda) past it; better have talk of joint Galloway book; told people who asked (Hodder & Stoughton through Dr Robertson Nicoll) that wouldn't have anybody else but J.P. (great and only) to do it with; if they wanted anybody else thing was off; would prefer Macmillan if could arrange it as M's have just bought two great (unwritten) works; will Pennell be in London from now through April-May into June; will try run up and see; book wouldn't be any goer till about June 1900 for publishing or 1901 if longer time; drawings should be done this year; H&S would give MacM's terms anyway; publishers would pay Pennell; also purely commercial when comes to work; great artist with fine touch; was down at remote La Grand last year; includes sketch showing elevation of Pulitzer Building; kind greetings to lady principal; not allowed to smoke any more but can eat fruit salad; wishes had some now; written book to praise and glory of America in Europe but there's one beast in it - a malcontent once came across
