Description
Journalistic report of a talk given the previous evening by Miss Winifred E. Gunn on S. R. Crockett. Reports Crockett's own account of his Galloway childhood: a lonely child on a Galloway farm, working harvest, losing himself on the moors, a strict Cameronian upbringing in which most books were forbidden. Gives his account of writing The Stickit Minister at Penicuik as an instant success, and of his wife entering a Paris bookshop (Hachette) to find a poster for a French translation titled Le Curé Assassiné. Notes The Lilac Sunbonnet as the best expression of his youth; The Raiders as his most famous romance. Records that Crockett dictated stories on trains; recounts his dream of a naked, shivering old man on a damp hillside as an example of direct inspiration.
