Description

Obituary notice reporting the death of Mrs Ruth Mary Crockett, widow of S. R. Crockett, at her residence Bengairn, Peebles. States she was a daughter of a Manchester merchant, and continued to reside in the Peebles house where her husband lived and worked. Notes the house name Bengairn is taken from the Galloway district in which The Raiders is laid. Records that Crockett established his large library at Bengairn, for which a separate building was erected in the garden; his study had a revolving roof indicative of his interest in astronomy, which is still preserved. Notes that Mrs Crockett attended the unveiling of the memorial to her husband at Lauriston [sic] the previous summer, accompanied by her daughter Miss Rutherford Crockett, who has also attained considerable distinction as a novelist.
