Memorandum of Agreement between S.R. Crockett and Hodder & Stoughton, "Grey Galloway"

First formal contract between Crockett and Hodder & Stoughton for the book then titled "Grey Galloway." Grants Hodder & Stoughton exclusive UK, colonial, and dependency rights to print and publish in book form, at a nominal price of six shillings. Royalty terms: 15% on the first 2,000 copies sold, 20% on the next 3,000 (to 5,000), 25% thereafter; 10% on remainder copies. Commissions Joseph Pennell for fifty drawings at a fee of £300, payable to Pennell on receipt of the original drawings. Sets a publication deadline of 30 April 1902, with £100 payable to Crockett in advance on the day of publication. Requires Crockett to deliver the manuscript in time to meet that deadline; makes no separate penalty provision for late delivery beyond the general terms of Clause 5. Contains no subscription or "edition de luxe" provision of any kind. American rights, translation rights, and Continental English-language rights reserved to Crockett. Accounts to be made up every six months (to 30 June and 31 December), settled each November and May. Copyright to remain with Crockett, terminable by either party after five years' notice, with reversion terms specified. A.P. Watt & Son named as Crockett's authorised agents for collection of payment.
