Description

Thanks for brightly written fraternal letter; plaid and books arrived safely via bank; relished amusing account of other people's sheep effect on worthy people; glad friend out of precedence business; grateful for correctly finding books and plaids; will act on peats hint; reports rather bad three weeks confined to room (bed and couch) but hasn't had such turn for year; grateful despite wishing not to have it at all; can live with open windows, fresh air, do little work occasionally or more when days warm and breeze propitious; early winter tries him even here, would be in Balmaghie Kirkyard if in North; reflects on life's insignificance viewing from Monte Rosa across Italian plain to Monte Viso but realising distorted perspective once among peasant folk; queries whether sent book packages at Manse or Cottage; if Manse, requests opening and marking received volumes, informing Dent of receipt by proxy due to indisposition abroad; if at Cottage, Dent must do without; son Philip busy contradicting illness paragraphs as publishers won't take books from sick authors; Watt advises saying nothing of illness; enjoys Montague greatly; glad to have old marked Bible from when knew Greek and Hebrew; envies friend keeping up classes; can still read Latin but not Greek beyond New Testament context; Xenophon would defeat him; doubts knowing all Hebrew letters; sends good grace and salaam to wife; hopes to shake hand someday
