From Private Hospital St Andre France; thanks for forwarded letter; apologises for complications arranging cottage items; writing to Robert Thomson to define case; suggests friend deliver all keys to Robert Thomson with Mary McConnachie's information; suffered much pain from diagnostic error - quinine was poison; recovering slowly from enteritis weighing 9-10 stones; sleeping on covered balcony; most cares for pens and marked Bagster Bible; seeks Oxford Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy and 3 volumes Montague in red morocco from front bedroom; plaid marked R.C. in tin trunk; sorry to cause worry; hopes to visit next year if well; written all books in bed or on couch but working has been comfort; daughter Maisie at Edinburgh College hunting degrees; Philip 3¼ years with Scotsman; George 3 years in China with Canton River pirates, now sub-lieutenant; Mrs Crockett does not stir from home; Margaret (17) at school; three children spend weekends at Torwood; family partly united in holidays but Crockett pinned to rest cure; drinking only milk for 13 months
