Description
Letter to the Editor dated 28 June 1932 from James B. Johnston, 63 Cluny Gardens, Edinburgh. Writes as a classmate of Crockett at New College, Edinburgh. Disputes that Crockett was not discovered in the literary sense till 1891, stating he was already writing for the Pall Mall Gazette in the 1880s and that Dulce Cor was carefully revised at his elbow within the precincts of New College. Recalls the farewell class dinner (1886) — including Sir J. Arthur Thomson, Professor James Seth, and Dr Lewis Robertson — at which Crockett read a farewell poem, Valete Fratres, and presented each with a copy. States Crockett never showed the faintest interest in theology. Is certain the Christian Leader began printing fugitive articles which afterwards made up The Stickit Minister around that same time, and requests verification from anyone with access to the defunct paper's files.
