White Pope declined by Harper & Bros; agent in New York (Paget) offered it to Macmillan who offer $1000 for America and Canadian serial and book rights; Watt doesn't like selling books outright as one might have unexpectedly large sale; told Macmillan to offer $500 serial and $500 book against royalties; they decline; book to be published in Britain 6th February; had no success selling serial rights in country although did best; Watt negotiates through Hodder Williams with George H. Doran; he will give US book rights at $1000 advance rising from 10% to 15% at 10,000 and 20% above 10,000 when gets American serial rights thrown in; Canadian rights already in agreement ensuring Mrs Crockett gets as much as Macmillan prepared to pay and more if book really successful
