Ruth writes personally to Marion who with John loved Crockett well; shock sudden and blow heavy, all stunned; husband dead and in coffin, sent over from France by French doctor before family knew; poor Philip had to identify body, terribly hard for lad; no full particulars yet but death sudden, unexpected, very peaceful; Crockett had no idea himself - three brave bright letters week before asking for books; no funeral invitations sent as all complicated with foreign customs, uncertain of arrangements even day before; children very brave, Ruth trying to be but very hard knowing so little of what was coming; husband had suffered especially from weakness, could not have borne living unable to work so must be mercy though dark to family; love and prayers of many like Marion make life possible; thanks for letter
